As the Founding Patron of 'The Kids Cancer Centre Research Unit' at Sydney Children's Hospital and with September being Childhood Cancer Awareness Month your donation will go a long way to help us find a cure for childhood cancers, and in the short term a better way for us to treat children suffering now with childhood cancers.
We are proud to be the largest ever donor to Sydney Children's Hospital.
The Kids Cancer Centre at Sydney Children's has benefited from the $7.7million that has been donated to them from Kids with Cancer Foundation. In 2014 we made the final $600,000 payment during the Gold Telethon for the new Kids Cancer Centre Research Unit, bringing our total to $1.53million over the five telethons as well as our normal $1.65million donated to Sydney Children's Hospital and our $1.4million to The Children's Hospital at Westmead over the same five year period. These two hospitals alone received $4.5million over this period with a further $1,000,000 in 2014.
When you make a donation to any charity there is always a concern:
"how much of my dollar gets through to the cause".
Most charities these days employ professional fundraisers (that take a huge percentage) to seek donations on their behalf. Be aware and informed when you sign up for ongoing donations in shopping centres or through door-to-door reps.
Some major children's charities will pay 85% of your first 12 month's donations to commercial fundraisers. If you donate a total of $100 in the first year, only $15 goes to the charity and then admin fees are taken by the charity before any funds are used for the purpose of the donation. The practice of allowing 'for profit' organisations to take the majority of your valuable donation is not one that we use or endorse.
The best way to donate to any charity is to ring or mail them directly, as some charities will also use commercial organisations to mail you seeking donations on behalf of a charity. Most raffle sales are also made this way, always read the fine print and never purchase tickets from phone sellers as the vast majority of phone sales come from commercial organisations, who don't declare their interest.
We use all our donations 100% for family assistance and the cancer wards in children's hospitals with no management fees whatsoever taken from donations made directly to us. All management costs come from the lotteries that we run throughout the year, so our donations remain untouched.
Finding a cure for childhood cancer is of the utmost importance and to this end we have been involved in funding research into childhood cancer since 1999 however we also appreceiate that the kids suffering now from this dreadful disease have a vital need to be as comfortable & pain free as they can while they are in one of our cancer wards undergoing treatment. We always ask that any request for funding comes from the senior oncologist in our children's hospitals and in this way we know we are providing funds to the most important areas.
The other side of the funds that we provide go to relieve the financial burden placed on parents of children with cancer. Imagine giving up your job and moving to a city hospital to be at your baby's or young child's side as they undergo treatment, sometimes for months on end. How do you pay your mortgage, rent, electricity or any other household bill? We do more for direct family financial assistance for children under the age of 13 than others due to the fact that (unlike other children's cancer charities) we don't have a dollar limit per family per year.
We pay family electricity, gas, water, phone, Rates, rents, mortgages, accommodation, school fees & tuition, home insurance. We assist families to get their kids to hospital for treatment, we put tyres on cars, pay for mechanical repairs, pay car regos & insurance, we have purchased 7 second hand cars for families in country areas to get their kids to city hospitals. In the past 3 years our total to families alone is $906,000.
We have helped families with purchases for kids beds & bedding, fridges, freezers, heaters, washing machines & dryers & other furniture items including single room air conditioners for a child who has returned home after bone marrow transplant & needs to remain inside. We have paid airfares to fly in grandparents & other family members for single mums who need the extra help when one child is in hospital & siblings need to get to school.
We have provided grocery vouchers and vouchers for clothes and toys at Christmas time.
We assist families all over Australia to pay their funeral fees when they lose a child to cancer & can't afford the funeral expenses. In the 2012-13 financial year we assisted 22 families with funeral expenses for the youngest of children as part of the $280,000 that we paid to cancer families. Unlike others we don't discriminate on location when a child dies, and we will share costs with other charities in order to have the total outstanding payments made.
We don't ring for donations if anyone rings and says it's kids with cancer seeking donations or selling raffle tickets, it isn't. These two emails (below) came through on the same day and of course we can't help people who give their details to telemarketers and don't know who they were. We urge our supporters not to fall for the trap of commercial fundraisers or possibly scammers.
I purchased some lottery tickets from your phone operator approximately one month ago, I was told that I would receive confirmation of my entry by email, the reference number given to me was 290685. I have only just realised that the email did not arrive and am wondering if I have been scammed. I will no longer purchase lottery tickets over the phone, so please take me off your calling list. Once again we don't call for ticket sales.
During the week I received a phone call from Kids with Cancer and I donated $20 with my visa card to this very nicely spoken person. This was for 4 tickets plus 4 more if I paid for it over the phone with my visa .
A receipt was to come to my email address with the numbers of the tickets. As I have not received any receipt as yet and have now read that your Association does not ring for donations I am terrible worried that I may have been scammed.
I am an elderly person and am worried as to this person now having my Visa numbers., Could you please advise me if my donation has been presented to your Association. Once again we don't call for ticket sales.
Donate directly now and 100% of your donation will be passed to families & children's hospital's cancer wards.
