The 100% charity

100% of all direct donations to Kids with Cancer Foundation are passed on to struggling families of kids with cancer.

No management fees, salaries or any running costs of the Foundation are taken from our 'Gift Account', and that is our promise to cancer families and our supporters.  Our donations are only used for families who are struggling financially, and have a child in one of our Australian children's hospitals being treated for childhood cancer.

Cancer families must travel to a major city children's hospital to have their child treated, and the cost can cripple a family's available income over this treatment period, which is at the least months and usually years.  We have no maximum dollar amount per family/per year as we take each social worker's request on merit when it's received.

You can help a family of a young child with cancer today, by ensuring that your donation to a children's cancer charity will get through to the kids in its entirety.

Donate by free call to: 1800 255522, or mail cheques to, Kids with Cancer Foundation PO Box 135 Westmead NSW 2145.

With our first of five pledged $300,000 payments to fund the new Cancer Research Unit, in June 2011 Kids with Cancer Foundation became the largest ever donor to Sydney Children's Hospital.

We are proud of our ongoing association with Sydney Children's and it is only with the continued help from our millions of supporters that this milestone has been reached.  As an independent children's charity we receive no Government nor corporate assistance, it has been achieved in a relatively short period of time and forms just part of our total assistance to eight children's hospitals and hundreds of families.

Cancer Therapies Unit Gets the Green Light to Test Innovative Cancer Treatments

for Children with Incurable Cancer

MEDIA RELEASE:

Kids with Cancer Foundation, has pledged/paid $110,000 to set up a Cancer Therapies Unit at the Centre for Children’s Cancer and Blood Disorders (CCC&BD) at Sydney Children’s Hospital, Randwick. The therapies unit will open in June 2008, and will start testing new cancer medications that have the potential to cure the 30% of children whose cancer does not respond to current treatments, such as chemotherapy and radiotherapy.

“This is an essential innovation for Sydney Children’s Hospital’s cancer services,” said the Head of the new unit, Dr David Ziegler. “There is a growing awareness that we have probably achieved the maximum amount we can achieve with therapies that are currently available.”

“It is critical that we look for new ways to treat and cure cancer in children. Patients who will benefit from the new therapies unit include children who suffer negative side effects from current treatments, such as hair loss, nausea and weakening of the immune system. Most importantly we will be able to test new treatments for those children who do not respond to current therapies at all, and who until now have had no other option than being placed on palliative care,”
said Dr Ziegler.

The generosity of Kids with Cancer Foundation will enable the unit to combine the expertise Dr Ziegler has acquired training overseas at Harvard Medical School, with established research programs. The unit’s aim is to translate innovative Australian discoveries from the laboratory bench to the bedsides of children suffering from incurable cancers.

Peter Bodman, Executive Director, Kids with Cancer Foundation said, ‘Kids with Cancer Foundation are very proud of the long standing relationship we have with Sydney Children’s Hospital. Having donated more than $3,325,000 over the past 10 years to CCC&BD, we are excited to be able to fund this vital innovation in cancer services. We expect the next few years will see the development of new cancer cures, which Australian children will be amongst the first in the world to receive. We are honoured to play a part in helping these remarkable and brave young patients survive cancer, and go on to lead normal, healthy lives.”

Adam Check, Chief Executive Officer at Sydney Children’s Hospital Foundation says “We are deeply grateful for the extraordinary partnership between the Kids with Cancer Foundation and the Sydney Children’s Hospital, specifically the Centre for Children’s Cancer and Blood Disorders. We are able to make a difference in the lives of seriously ill children thanks to your support.”

From the patients, families and staff at Sydney Children’s Hospital we thank Kids with Cancer Foundation for making an enormous difference for children with cancer.

Sydney Children's, Gold Week Telethon donation: $30,000 to offset families drug costs.

Many of our children come to the Hospital with very rare forms of cancer, and of these there are a few for whom outcomes may not always be positive. With many of the drugs that can provide the care and treatment for these rare forms of cancer not covered by the PBS, CCC&BD has required over $100,000 worth of extra drug costs alone this year. These drugs are essential to the care for our children, many of whom would not survive without them, and when combined with treatments such as a Bone Marrow Transplant, these drugs provide the best outcomes for our most vulnerable
children. With your continued support, CCC&BD will continue to meet its goals of providing the best possible care for our brave young oncology patients and their family both now, and for the future.

Your support for these essential drugs has quite simply saved the lives of children who would not be alive today without these drugs, so thank you. Louise Claridge, Sponsorship Manager July 2010.

Louise Claridge, Partnership Manager and Rebecca Havas, Fundraising Manager from

Sydney Children's Hospital's Foundation

at the cheque presentation for the social work position, September 2010.

The Sydney Children’s Hospital, Randwick, has some very brave children fighting serious illnesses they can often find hard to accept and, even harder to understand. Your support ensures the future success of our vital medical programmes and services, so our children can be cared for and treated by the most up-to-date methods available.

Thank you once again for your generosity. Your concern and support for our children and their families is greatly appreciated.
Adam Check, Chief Executive Officer, Sydney Children’s Hospital Foundation 2010.

Cancer Research Centre $1.5million pledge:

The creation of this space is an important development in the integration of service delivery with research functions. The new Cancer Research Centre, under the leadership of Prof. Glenn Marshall, is one of three strategic capital priorities which currently exist on the Randwick Campus of the Sydney Children’s Hospitals Network.

As you are well aware through your ongoing and generous support, the Hospital’s Centre for Children’s Cancer and Blood Disorders is internationally renowned for its work in treating children with complex blood disorders and cancers. This new Centre — which has been in planning from some time — will dramatically improve our research endeavours.

The Centre will provide the best possible infrastructure for our researchers to congregate and focus on applying new therapeutic techniques and drug discovery at the clinical-face, where the majority of our work occurs. The Centre is ‘best-practice’ in terms of clinically-driven research, where a critical mass of professionals including senior clinicians, research scientists and data analysts can work together, in one space, to continue our goal of working towards 100% survival for children with cancer. Elizabeth Koff, Chief Executive, The Sydney Children's Hospitals Network (Randwick and Westmead)

*Part time Psychologist, Long-Term Follow-Up Clinic

As well as the physical impact, childhood cancer and its treatment may have a serious psychological impact, with survivors experiencing fear of cancer returning and uncertainty about the future, practical and social consequences, changed roles, and discrimination and insurance issues. Multiple studies and reviews have investigated the long term psychological aftermath of childhood cancer and have reported that survivors are at increased risk of depression, anxiety, post traumatic stress and reduced quality of life compared to their peers and siblings. As the number of children surviving cancer continues to increase, we need to better understand their needs and concerns and provide better services to support them.

For children, many late effects are not detectable at the end of treatment. Instead, they become obvious only when the child grows and matures, meaning that the provision of medical and psychological care for many years post-treatment is essential. As well, we need more research and better coordination of after-cancer psychological care to identify potential psychological and practical problems (and risk factors for these) and to prevent or address them early and appropriately.

We urge you to consider the children in a hospital near you.  Please donate, post cheques to: Kids with Cancer Foundation, PO Box 135 Westmead NSW 2145 or for credit cards: free-call any donations to 1800 255522, and we guarantee that 100% of these donations will be passed to families, or use this Donate now button or at the top of the page.

"As a wonderful and long term friend of the hospital, Kids with Cancer Foundation has been granted the status of Founder this year.  Congratulations on this amazing achievement.

Your support over the last seven years and the magnificent contribution that you have all made to the Oncology unit is to be applauded.  You have made a real difference to children with cancer and their families that we care for.  Without your support of key positions within the team, we would, quite simply, not be able to offer the level of support that we currently do to children and their families.

I know that you all work very hard to be able to support us like you do and on behalf of all the Oncology team here at the hospital, I want to say  congratulations and thank you for being our friends in the fight against childhood cancer."  Niki Mackay, Account Manager, Oncology Unit.

The Oncology Unit at The Children’s Hospital at Westmead is the largest childhood cancer unit in NSW. Kids with Cancer Foundation is a generous and long-standing partner of The Oncology Unit’s clinical and research programs and shares our commitment to saving lives and supporting children with cancer and their families.

Kids with Cancer Foundation have supported the Unit for many years and we are extremely appreciative of their hard work and efforts. The positions funded through Kids with Cancer Foundation directly benefit the children and families in our care and make an enormous difference to their lives as they travel through the cancer journey.  The Foundation has the status of Founder at the hospital in recognition of their invaluable contribution to The Oncology Unit and The Children’s Hospital at Westmead.

In 2008 we gave two Mac laptop computers to the Oncology Play Therapist, Cathy Quinn at Westmead.  The kids in the oncology ward use the Macs to occupy their time while they are in the ward for treatment.

The Macs allow the kids via the inbuilt camera, microphone and music software to create music and songs as well as images of their visitors and nursing staff as a slide show and share them with others in the Oncology ward.  Their visitors are able to download recent images or movies of family events away from the hospital for the kids to watch.

A donation to the Foundation of just $1,700 will allow us to place another laptop in a children's oncology ward near you.

The Oncology Department at The Children’s Hospital at Westmead is the largest childhood cancer department in NSW. Each year in NSW approximately 250 new children are diagnosed with cancer. We are responsible for the care of between 120 and 150 of these new patients and their families. Since 1976 more than 3,000 children have received treatment for cancer in our department and more than 2,200 of these patients are long-term survivors. Back in 1976 when our unit opened its doors, most children with cancer died. Now, because of intense and focused research, there have been vast improvements in treatment and supportive care and, 4 out of 5 children survive cancer permanently.

The department’s multi-disciplinary approach to curing children with cancer means that the unique needs and concerns of each patient and their families can be individually addressed. Quality of life is particularly important to our young patients and their families. We have an array of specialists on call to help support each child and family through tailored treatment programs. These include psychologists, social workers, child life (play) therapists, specialist nurses, teachers, and paediatric fellows.

The exceptional calibre of the department’s staff underpins the firm foundation of our childhood cancer treatment program. Our team provides not only medical excellence which is delivered with sensitivity, but also emotional support to children and their families.

Sustaining existing programs and developing new initiatives to explore research and treatment opportunities are not possible without the support of our partners ids with Cancer Foundation is a valued partner of the work we do at the Oncology Department. Kids with Cancer Foundation shares our commitment  to supporting and impacting the lives of children diagnosed with and managing cancer. Kids with Cancer Foundation recognises the need to treat the family rather than the individual and  without the support of Kids with Cancer Foundation in funding the various  programs, this holistic approach to our work would not be possible.

The positions supported through Kids with Cancer Foundation directly benefit the children and families in our care and make an enormous difference to their lives not just now but in the future. The Children’s Hospital at Westmead is proud and appreciative of our partnership with the Foundation recognised as Founder of the Hospital.

The Hospitals’ greatest asset is our staff and we seek support from Kids with Cancer Foundation to continue their invaluable partnership to the Oncology Department in funding these critical positions within our childhood cancer treatment program. March 2011

In 2011 we donated 2 Apple iPads to remain as the property of the Social Work Unit for the use of children in isolation, as well as for families to take home when children were allowed home yet to return as outpatients.  Pictured is Social Worker Jessica Watt.

Founding Patron of the 'Children's Cancer Centre'

Monash Medical Centre, Melbourne

$1.157million

Kids with Cancer Foundation donated $1.157million to build and fit-out the 'Children's Cancer Centre'. In 2006 Kids with Cancer Foundation was recognised as the Founding Patron of the Monash 'CCC'.

 'Children's Cancer Centre'

Monash Children's is part of Victoria’s largest health service uniquely providing in one organisation, primary, secondary and tertiary health services. The Monash Children’s Cancer Centre is an integral part of the new Monash Children’s and cares for 30% of Victoria’s childhood cancer patients. The centre incorporates purpose-built treatment rooms, medical consulting rooms, a day treatment facility and an innovative facility capable of providing general anaesthesia for minor oncology procedures.

The Minister said the new centre was an integral part of the Government's new Paediatric Integrated Cancer Services, which aims to streamline treatment for young patients.  "The new centre means children going through a very difficult illness will have state-of-the-art facilities and more integrated, co-ordinated care.  The Children's Cancer Centre at Monash is now introducing innovations in the way kids are treated for cancer, for example, this is the first facility in the State to be able to anaesthetise children without having to send them to an operating theatre." Ms Pike said.

Without the million dollar plus gift provided by Kids with Cancer Foundation the new purpose built day oncology facilities might never have seen the light of day.  Now treatment for Victorian children with cancer has been significantly boosted and the more than 100 parents, patients and a clearly excited group of Southern Health staff and dignitaries who attended the launch on July 25 were thrilled at the great leap forward. said Southern Health Chief Executive Linda Sorrell.

A note from a mother:

"A few weeks ago I purchased some raffle tickets at a shopping centre in Melbourne. My daughter has newly been diagnosed with ALL so when I see a cancer charity I tend to always give what I can.

I had not heard of your charity before and was not sure what the money went to. I was just thinking about this so I thought I would have a look at your website. It made me teary! I had no idea that the place that is now my second home was build thanks to you. My daughter’s treatment is at the Monash Children’s Cancer Centre. I just wish to thank you so much for your efforts in raising this money. It is such a fantastic relaxed environment. I couldn't imagine how hard it would be if the CCC was not there.

Once again just thank you so very much, it means the world to us and many other families. In the future I wish to be able to help even half as much as you have".

Kids with Cancer Foundation had originally approached the 'Royal Children's Hospital', 'Monash Medical Centre' and 'Peter McCallum Cancer Institute' with an offer of funding but it was rejected.  The parents group had been working with Southern Health and Monash to provide more kids cancer services in Clayton but funds were the problem.  Our funds were still available and we were asked to provide all the funds to construct and fit-out the new Day Ward.

Since our first payment of $650,000 the Victorian Government announced the new Paediatric Integrated Cancer Services group, PICS.  The size of the project changed and the total funds required to complete the Day Ward has risen to $1.157m.  We were pleased to be able to provide the total funds on behalf of our supporters to Southern Health/Monash Medical Centre, to complete the program.

The funds we have provided, come from the $2 raffle tickets we sell in Victorian shopping centres.  Help us to continue our support of Victorian cancer sufferers by buying $2 tickets when you see our displays.

  • 2004 - Initial funding for the construction and fit-out of the new Paediatric Oncology Day Ward $650,000.

  • 2005 - Further funding for the construction and fit-out of the Children's Cancer Centre at Monash, bringing our total commitment to $1.157m

Peter Bodman, Kids with Cancer presents the cheque to Linda Sorell, Chief Executive, Monash Children's.  Work commenced late 2005 on the new Children's Cancer Centre, completely funded with a donation of $1.157m by the Kids with Cancer Foundation's Victorian raffles.

Premier's comment: In July 2005 the Premier, The Hon. Steve Bracks wrote: "These projects represent the achievement of key milestones in my Government's Fighting Cancer Policy and Cancer Services Framework for Victoria.  Once again thank you for your generous, ongoing support towards the well-being of children with cancer and their families".

The new Children's Cancer Centre was officially opened in July 2006 by the Minister for Health Bronwyn Pike.  The $1.157 million dollar gift is one of the largest individual gifts ever received by Southern Health.  The Children's Cancer Centre incorporates purpose-built treatment rooms, a spacious waiting area, consulting space and enhanced resources.  The new unit will care for 20-30 per cent of Victoria's childhood cancer patients and is situated near the main entrance, which will make it more accessible, providing a child and family-friendly environment.

Mr Bodman said he was pleased to return the proceeds of the raffles his Foundation conducted in Victoria to help kids suffering from cancer and he personally thanked those many Victorians who had purchased tickets in the various car raffles for providing the funds used to create the Children's Cancer Centre.

"We are so pleased to be able to complete work on this eagerly-anticipated project", said Southern Health Chief Executive Linda Sorrell.  "The new facilities promise to provide even better care for some of our youngest and most vulnerable patients.  It is fantastic that we have also received such generous community support through our partnership with, Kids with Cancer Foundation"

Royal Children’s Hospital, Melbourne

We are pleased to be able (in some small way) to help the families of young children treated in the Children’s Cancer Centre at RCH Melbourne. Our family financial assistance to Victorian families in the 2010/11 financial year was in excess of $84,000, yet (with a similar demographic) it was $200,000 for NSW families.  Victorian families are missing out on vital funding.

We can do a lot more for the families if the social workers could contact us on each family’s behalf, but at the moment (unlike every other children's hospital) each family is handed a list of charities  so the parents can go door knocking to find a charity like us, that is able to help.

In 2010 we offered to fund an additional social worker at RCH to relieve some of the stress placed on the present staff in the social work unit (the offer was for a minimum of three years) but our offer of a donation to help Victorian families was rejected by the RCH CEO and the Board of the RCH Foundation.  Our offer of course still stands as we consider it vital to the welfare of the RCH families.

Despite our constant rejections we will continue to do all we can for Victorian families.  We do have contact (almost weekly) with the oncology social worker at the other Victorian children's hospital, Monash Children’s, where we (with our $1.157million donation to build and fit-out) are the Founding Patron of their Children’s Cancer Centre which in partnership with RCH and Peter Mac. forms part of the Victorian Government's, Paediatric Integrated Cancer Services (PICS).
