Social Worker

The Department of Social Work at Westmead Children's requested and received funding, for two social work positions in the oncology unit.  The additional positions were required to address the growing need for support services for families with children with cancer.  These positions are providing crisis support to parents and children at the time of diagnosis or relapse in the child's condition and extend services to siblings and other family members.  Carly Jeffery and John Wiggins are the two Kids with Cancer Foundation funded social workers.

Carly sml

“Thanks to Kids with Cancer Foundation, I am in a position where I am able to directly provide both psychological and practical support to the families that enter the Oncology unit on a daily basis.  During my time here I’ve witnessed that what the Kids With Cancer Foundation provides is more than just paying for a bill. That bill payment can mean giving a parent a day off work to support their child during treatment at the hospital knowing that they can still provide for their family.  This is a day that they couldn't buy and can’t get again.  The days that the Kids With Cancer Foundation give to families, means so much more to them, than the monetary value of the bill and for that I’m extremely grateful for the support and assistance that The Kids With Cancer Foundation continues provides to children with cancer and their families”.  July 2013, Carly – Kids with Cancer Foundation Social Worker at The Children's Hospital Westmead

Since 2002 Kids with Cancer Foundation have provided funding to Westmead Children's Hospital in excess of $1million for the two social work positions.
